The St Andrew's Cross South Africa, Safety, Use & Buyer's Guide

If our standard range doesn’t fit your space, your body, or your vision — we build to spec. From a single modified piece to a full private dungeon, everything is quoted, made by hand, and collected discreetly.

What is a St Andrew's Cross?

The St Andrew’s Cross — also called an X-cross or saltire — is one of the most recognised pieces of BDSM furniture. The frame is built in an X shape, designed for a person to stand spread-eagle against it with their wrists secured at the upper two points and their ankles at the lower two. It is used for restraint scenes, impact play from behind, sensation play, and flogging.

A purpose-built cross is designed to carry a standing person’s full weight against the frame under movement and load. It is not decorative — the frame, weld quality, and anchor placement all need to work correctly for it to be safe.

Made in South Africa. Every Fetish Fabrications bench is welded and finished by hand in our Krugersdorp workshop. No flatpack, no import. If you need a non-standard dimension or configuration, we build it to spec.

Standard vs Folding — Which to Choose

Standard Cross

Fixed frame, maximum rigidity. Best for dedicated spaces or home dungeons where the cross stays in one place. It can be wall mounted or free standing.

From R8,500 — custom sizing available

Folding cross

Same mild steel construction with a fold-flat hinge system. Stores flat against a wall or in a cupboard. Ideal for smaller rooms or shared living situations. Same rated load capacity as the standard model.

From R14,500 — custom sizing available

Build Quality & Load Ratings

Our crosses are built from mild steel, welded at every joint — not bolted or pinned. Each cross is checked for squareness and frame integrity before finishing. Contact points are padded with high-density foam wrapped in durable vinyl.

Anchor points

Anchor O-rings are welded directly into the frame at wrist and ankle positions — not bolted on as aftermarket additions. The four-point restraint configuration suits standard cross use for both shorter and taller users within the frame’s height range.

Custom sizing: If you need a taller or wider frame to suit a specific user’s height or a particular room layout, quote on request. Custom dimensions are available at no extra charge within standard material.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a St Andrews Cross cost in South Africa?

A standard steel St Andrews Cross from Fetish Fabrications starts at R8,500. Our folding St Andrews Cross, built with a fold-flat hinge system for easy storage against a wall or inside a cupboard, starts at R14,500. Both include welded O-ring anchor points and high-density foam padding wrapped in durable vinyl. Custom sizing is available at no extra charge.

What is the difference between a wall-mounted and freestanding St Andrews Cross?

A wall-mounted St Andrews Cross is fixed to a solid wall and takes up less floor space. A freestanding cross has a weighted base and can be placed anywhere in the room without drilling. Both options are available from Fetish Fabrications — we will advise which suits your space and wall type during the quote process.

Is a St Andrews Cross safe?

A purpose-built St Andrews Cross from a reputable maker is designed for load, stability, and safe restraint positioning. Our crosses are welded from mild steel at every joint, rated for 120kg of dynamic use, and checked for squareness and frame integrity before finishing. Wrist and ankle positions follow safe ergonomic placement to reduce shoulder strain and circulation issues during use.

Can I see a St Andrews Cross before I order?

Yes. Fetish Fabrications furniture is available to view at our partner showroom at Play With Me in Lonehill, Sandton. Private viewings can also be arranged by appointment. Seeing the weld quality, padding, and stability in person makes a real difference before committing to a custom build.

Do you offer payment plans on a St Andrews Cross?

We offer a 3-month lay-by at 0% interest on all furniture orders. No deposit is required on single pieces — balance is due before collection. For combo or full room builds, an 80% deposit applies. All orders are invoiced under Doman Solutions Pty Ltd for complete discretion.
